8 questions · instant result

Each question shows a sequence of figures that follow a hidden rule. Work out the rule and choose the figure that comes next. After each one you get the answer and a plain-English explanation of the pattern. Nothing is uploaded; only your score is saved on this device.

What an abstract reasoning test measures

Abstract reasoning tests measure how well you spot patterns and rules among shapes — independent of language or numbers. Because they strip away learned knowledge, they are one of the strongest single measures of general problem-solving ability, and a favourite in graduate and technical recruitment.

The common rules

Almost every sequence follows one simple rule. The usual suspects:

RuleWhat changes across the figures
CountingThe number of dots, lines or shapes goes up or down by a fixed amount.
RotationAn element turns by a fixed angle (45° or 90°) each step.
ShadingA shape alternates between filled and empty.
SizeA shape grows or shrinks by a fixed amount.
PositionAn element moves around the figure in a fixed direction.

How to get better

Check one feature at a time — first count, then rotation, then shading, then position — instead of staring at the whole figure. The moment one feature changes in a regular way, you have the rule. Reviewing the explanation for every item trains you to find it faster.

More practice

Abstract reasoning pairs naturally with the spatial reasoning test (mental rotation of shapes) and the logical reasoning test (number and letter patterns).

This test is for practice and self-assessment. It is not an official aptitude exam; your result estimates your skill on these questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is an abstract reasoning test?

An abstract reasoning test measures how well you spot patterns and rules among shapes, independent of language or numbers. You identify the rule in a sequence — such as rotation, counting or shading — and pick the figure that comes next.

What does an abstract reasoning test measure?

It is one of the strongest single measures of general problem-solving ability, because it strips away learned knowledge and tests raw pattern recognition and flexible thinking.

How can I get better at abstract reasoning?

Check one feature at a time — count, then rotation, then shading, then position — rather than staring at the whole figure. Most sequences follow a single simple rule. Practising with explanations, as here, trains you to find it fast.

Is the abstract reasoning test free?

Yes — completely free, no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.
